Jiuquan District is situated in the western tip of Hexi Corridor, Gansu Province. It's bounded on the east by Zhangye District of Gansu and the west by Xinjiang. The Qilian Mountain lies to the south and the Inner Mongelia Autonomous Region north. It also has a common border with Mongolia. Baishan Hilly is located on the north part ,where it is very windy and dusty, owning to a typical Gobi Landscape. The yearly average temperature is 5--8'C and frost free period is 140--160 days. Its annual average sunshine time is 2800--3300 and precipitation is 50--200mm. The center part is Shulehe Valley of Hexi Corridor ,a smooth terrain full of sunshine and heat energy. fhe yearly average temperature of Sule River's lower reaches , Anxi and Dunhuang is 8--10`C and frost--free period is about 150 days. It's annual average sunshine time is 3,200 hours and precipitation is less than 50mm. Qilian Mountain on the north is permanently covered with snow, forming a peculiar glacial zone.

Jiuquan District is composed of three cities( Dunhuang, Yumeng ,Jiuquan) and four counties ( Akesai Kazak Autonomous Region, Subei Mongolia Autonomous County, Anxi, Jinta)with a land area of 192,000 Km2 ,occupying 42.5% of Gansu's landmass. 24 nationalities areliving here with a population of 889,400(Urban 735,500). This is one of the national lowest population density area. The Administrative Office is located inthe city of Jiuquan.
[NATURAL RESOURCES]Rich in mineral resources with a great varieiy and widely distribution, Jiuquan Disirict has 5 bigger metallogenic provinces which are distributed over the south and north mountains of Hexi Corridor. There are totally 572 mineral points including 92 mineral deposits approved by the nation and 48 different kinds. Metal reserves mainly include gold, silver, copper, iron, manganese, chromium, tungsten, vitriol, lead, zine, etc. Among these , the reserve of Taergou Tugsten Mine ranks second nationaily and Dadaoerji Chromite Mine ranks third. Nonmental reserves mainly include petrolium, asbestos, coal, magnesite , mirabilite , fluorite, quartz, limestorie , marble , phosphorus ,crude salt ,etc. The reserve of as bestos ranks third nationally and the reserve of magnesite ranks firstin Gansu Province. Petrolium reserve of Jiuquan Basin already clarified come to 205 - 234 million tons and peat 1,087,000 tons. The reserve of clay is 10 million tons. Analysis indicates & minerals like chromium, vitriol , tungsten , gold , magnesite, asbestos, have their advantages while gypsum , mirahilite , marble board and other construction materials have their prospective advantages. The district is rich in coal with a reserve of 0.5 billion tons which is distributed over Mazong Hill, Tuomatan and Jinmiaogou Rivers in Jiuquan District are continental rivers. There are three river systems ( Sule River, Hei River, Haerteng River ) including 15 main rivers. The gross volume of water resources is 5.3 billion m3, which volume of runoff is over 3,2 billion m3 and underground water is 2.3 billion m3 for multiple compensation. River runoff utilization is 59.l% and worth developing. The reserve of water power is 660,000 kW (188,000 KW can be exoplited). Rich in heat and sunshine , annual, radiation of sun hits 145--154 Kcal/cm2 and sunshine time is 3033--3317 hours. Wind power is also one important energy. Wind speed in Anxi, Mazong Hill, Yumeng is over 3m/second which lasting over 200 days a year and be of great value.
